The Wels-Grieskirchen Hospital in Austria is set to receive a much-needed boost in staffing with the arrival of 25 qualified nursing professionals from the Philippines. Among these dedicated individuals, two Filipino nurses and one male nurse will join the hospital staff to support and relieve the existing team. This influx of skilled healthcare workers is a welcome development for the hospital, which is facing challenges due to staffing shortages.

In a recent interview conducted by OÖ Nachrichten, some Filipino nurses shed light on their decision to choose Austria as their destination for career advancement. According to one of the nurses, the decision was influenced by the promise of a better future and enhanced job opportunities in Austria. They also expressed gratitude for the support they have received from the hospital, including affordable staff housing and assistance with travel arrangements.

The nurses highlighted healthcare workers’ financial struggles in the Philippines, where salaries are often insufficient to meet their needs. This economic reality has prompted many nurses to seek opportunities abroad, contributing to a shortage of essential healthcare staff in their home country. The opportunity to work in Austria offers a chance for professional growth and provides a more stable and comfortable living situation for the nurses and their families.

To ensure a smooth transition for the new nursing staff, the hospital has assigned an integration officer who will be available to assist with any questions or challenges that may arise. This proactive approach aims to support the nurses during their initial period of adjustment, ultimately increasing the likelihood of their long-term success and retention within the hospital.

Regarding their qualifications, the nursing training received by the Filipino staff in the Philippines is on par with the bachelor’s level training in Austria. To align their credentials with local standards, the nursing staff will undergo a course at the hospital’s training center starting in September. Following the training program, they can take an examination in May to become officially recognized as qualified healthcare and nursing professionals in Austria.

Carmen Breitwieser, the hospital’s managing director, emphasized the importance of providing comprehensive support to the new nursing staff to ensure successful integration into the healthcare team. By investing in the training and development of these skilled professionals, the hospital is addressing its immediate staffing needs and fostering a diverse and talented workforce that will contribute to the quality of care provided to patients.

The collaboration between the Wels-Grieskirchen Hospital and the Filipino nursing staff is a promising example of international cooperation in the healthcare sector. By leveraging the skills and dedication of these professionals, the hospital is positioning itself to better meet the healthcare needs of its community while offering valuable opportunities for personal and professional growth to the nursing staff from the Philippines.
